Unit-3: Vocabulary related to ‘Formal, Informal and Non-formal Education
1/Formal Education is a type of education which is provided by the state for school goers.
-It is state supported / structural educational system/ students learn through a program/ students get certificate. Example : primary school
2/Informal Education is a type of education which takes place outside the classroom / it is a lifelong process whereby individuals acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values from daily experience.
3/Non-Formal Education is a type of Education which is partly supported by the state.
-students learn through program but it is not usually evaluated and doesn’t lead to certificate
- it provides basic Education for children or Adults not attending school; It is an integral part of Formal Education-it is voluntary
Example : Adult literacy, evening classes or classes of reinforcement
4/ Vocational Education: it prepares learners for a career related to a specific occupation
Example : learning for job market
5/ Special Education : it refers to Educating students with special ( behavioral, health, academic or physical) needs that can’t be met using traditional programs or techniques.
Example : students with specific needs ( handicap : physical or mental unfitness)
6/ Inclusive Education : an education that addresses the learning needs of children, youth and adult ; Especially those who are vulnerable to marginalization and exclusion
Example : marginalized students
7/ Gifted education : educating children who have been identified as gifted or talented
Example : Gifted students
8/ Basic education: all types of education which aim to meet basic learning needs such as reading, writing and arithmetic ;Example : Illiterate people
Boarding school : a place for students who live away from their home and family
Literacy : the ability to read and write
Critical thinking : logical thinking that draws conclusion from evidence
Portfolio: the collection of students work such as writing assignments and presentations that stands for
Competencies or the student’s developmental progress
Problem solving : a way of learning in which students evaluate their thinking and progress while solving problems
Dropouts : students who left school without completing basic education
Compulsory : obligatory
Skill : an ability to perform actions
Note taking : writing pieces of information related to study
E-learning : Learning based on both computer and communication technology. The use of internet
Brainstorming: technique for producing ideas in a group by letting the mind think without interruption
Gifted : having superior mental ability or intelligence
Active learning : students learn by doing things
Universal values : common values to the world’s culture such as honesty, integrity and tolerance
Cooperative learning : students work together to do a task or mission
Partenership:a relation in which two or more people, organization or countries work together as partners
Receive: get or obtain / Support : help, subsidize, sponsor, bear /
structured : organized, arranged / Priority : essential. /
Eradicate: eliminate, wipe out. /
Bring about : produce /Firm(adj) : rigid, hard / Firm(n) : company
To fund : finance, pay for /
Straightforward : direct, simple, honest
deep : profound and bottomless/ Insight : understanding /
Aware : conscious / Refute : reject /
